“Human” Is A Dirty Word…

You know the old saying, “I’m only human.” I used to say human is a dirty word. But let’s put a Science Fiction twist to that. What if you didn’t have to be human? What if you could choose to become something else anytime you wanted then be human again when you chose?

I gave that some thought myself and in the end, the decision wasn’t hard at all.

Maybe a Klingon or Vulcan from Star Trek. A mutant like one of the X-Men might be pretty cool. Possibly Stargate SG-1’s Goa’uld or Jaffa. How about one of those energy-only aliens from the 1956 Sci-Fi classic Forbidden Planet?

Here’s what I came up with:

1) The Klingons have bad teeth, bad breath and those names…
2) The Vulcans are way, way too serious and full of themselves, not to mention most of them wear dresses…
3) The X-Men. Yeah, they’re cool with all those powers, uniforms and the X-Plane. But somebody’s always trying to get rid of them. I don’t need that…
4) The Goa’uld …a life-sucking worm with fangs? I think not!
5) The Jaffa are nurseries to those life-sucking worms. No thank you.
6) The Energy alien from Forbidden Planet…there would be some cool things you could do if you were nothing but energy. But what about all the things you couldn’t do?

Ya know, all in all, the word “human” doesn’t seem like such a dirty word anymore. I’m happy being just the way I am.

A Science Fiction Lesson From The Twilight Zone: Mr. James B. W. Beavis

Mr. James B. W. Beavis lives life like most of us wish we could. He’s lost his job(the sixth one he’s had in the last year), and found out his landlord is evicting him(he’s six weeks behind in the rent). Yet he doesn’t let any of it bother him. “It’s been that way before,” he says, and goes on building his model ships, playing football with the neighborhood kids, and sliding down stairway banisters.

Nobody understands how he can be so carefree with his life in such a mess. They all know he’s rather quirky. After all, how many “normal” people enjoy zither music and constantly act like a grown-up kid?

But, think for a minute. Mr. Beavis is always friendly to everybody, doesn’t look down on others and always has a smile on his face.

Mr. James B. W. Beavis knows how to live life to it’s fullest. He gets every ounce of good stuff he can. What’s the point of life if you live every moment discouraged, downtrodden, and depressed? That’s a recipe for a heart filled with anger. And that effects every area of our life including our relationships.

I want to follow the example of Mr. James B. W. Beavis—–living carefree and full of joy.

Don’t Let The Gate Close…

The current season of Stargate SG-1, which premiered last night (“The Quest, Part 2″), is set to be the final season of the show. As devoted fans for the past 10 years, it is our duty to do everything we can to save the show. The official SG-1 website has given us the opportunity to do something about it.

Top 10 Science Fiction Movie Characters

Some of the most memorable movie characters have and continue to come from the Science Fiction genre. The reason is that these characters face extraordinary circumstance and must use extraordinary means to overcome them.

The following is a list of ten of the best Science Fiction characters of all time. The two criteria used are the strength of the creation(writing) of the character and the quality of the acting.

On to the list(in no particular order).

1)Jon Anderton: Tom Cruise, Minority Report(2002)

2)Spencer Olham: Gary Sinise, Imposter(2002)

3)Robby Gallagher: Val Kilmer, Red Planet(2001)

4)Dr Clayton Forester: Gene Barry, War Of The Worlds(1953)

5)Commander John J. Adams: Leslie Neilson, Forbidden Planet(1956)

6)Neo: Keanu Reeves, The Matrix(1999)

7)Riddick: Vin Diesel, Pitch Black(2000)

8)Klaatu: Michael Rennie, The Day The Earth Stood Still(1951)

9)Snake Plissken: Kurt Russell, Escape From New York(1981)

10)The Terminator: Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Terminator(1984)

There are, of course, tons more to choose from and these are my personal favorites. I’m sure you have your own opinion—which I’d love to hear.

Not Enough Science Fiction On Sci-Fi…

The Sci-Fi channel is, naturally, one of my favorite TV channels. But, I have a bone to pick with them…

There’s way, way too much on Sci-Fi that isn’t actually Science Fiction. Let’s face it. A movie about a monster eating an entire town of people falls more into the realm of Horror than Science Fiction. Oh, and let’s not forget about all the Fantasy that shows up.

I know some will argue that the genre is Sci-Fi/Fantasy…and that’s o.k. if you are a fan of Fantasy. But, for those of us that are hard core Science Fiction, I say the channel should show strictly Science Fiction. Why not have new channels, i.e The Horror Channel, and The Fantasy Channel?

I can see it now. The greats (or Grand Masters) of Science Fiction like Isaac Asimov, Jack Williamson, Robert Heinlein–just to name a few–would throw up every other time they turned on the Sci-Fi channel and saw all the non-Science Fiction.

I know it makes me sick!
